LUCID, a 2D ‘Celestoidvania’, (an ingenious combination between Celeste and Metroid), is a stunning, pixel art adventure that is officially heading to Kickstarter later this year! It’s an ode to some of the greatest titles of all time including Super Metroid, A Link to the Past, and, MegaMan X. Via the trailer on their Steam page, you can also take away influences from newer titles like Hades, Doom 2016, and, of course, Celeste. LUCID is incredibly rich in color and music and looks to be on its way toward being one of the biggest games of 2023.
What is LUCID?
In LUCID, players go through their journey as Oenn, traveling through the land of Aedyn after it’s been destroyed due to the fall of the Lucid Giant in an event known as the Great Fall. Throughout his journey, he will come across a wildly unique cast of characters, enemies, and bosses that each have their own personalities, artistic styles, and color palettes. If you scroll through the screenshots below, you’ll see that these characters are paired with absolutely gorgeous landscapes and dungeons that each have their own obstacles that you’ll need to overcome.

You’ll also have access to a vast inventory of collectibles items that help Oenn on his journey as well as a skill tree for upgrades. These upgrades are tied to different weapons and abilities that you will also learn as you progress through every beautiful feature in LUCID.

If the above hasn’t already captivated you, then you’ll be excited to hear about the tight controls and fast movements that make up the gameplay. Oenn will have the opportunity to find five Crystal Arts that also help in learning new move sets; perfect for discovering your preferred way to play. To accompany that idea, you are also free to choose which levels you do next and how you progress through the story itself.
The game is also rich in lore exclusive to the world of Aedyn which ties into every dungeon you progress through, the weapons you find, and the people you encounter. There’s also a completely original score that’s clearly inspired by the greats, with lo-fi, chill beats similar to Donkey Kong Country, and more powerful, heart-pounding beats similar to Mega Man X.
