Yarrow Games has managed to create a completely new and unique experience to both the deckbuilding and roguelike genres in Tamarak Trail. The demo is currently on Steam, so we installed it and dove directly into it. We were immediately in awe at the beautiful art and the amount of customization that’s provided to you. The demo does a good job of showing you exactly what you can expect from the final release, making us all the more excited to finally get our hands on it.
What Is Tamarak Trail?
In Tamarak Trail, you play as one of three different character classes: Detective, Magician, and Tracker. Only the Detective is available to you in the demo. This character will then be able to venture out and journey on an evil and corrupted trail. Along the way, you’ll come across enemies that you’ll have to fight against using dice rolls as opposed to cards from a deck.
Each side of the dice has a different ability on it that can attack, defend, or perform a kind of ability. As you win battles, you’ll be granted more dice faces that you can use to customize your dice for even more powerful rolls. After some time, you’ll even be granted more dice that you can use in battle against multiple enemies and bosses. As we explained before, Tamarak Trail is a roguelike, meaning that if you die during a journey out on the trail, you’ll return to the Lodge and lose all of the abilities and dice that you’ve gained.
There are a few things you’ll be able to keep, including Garmonbozra, which are emblems used to upgrade parts of the lodge whenever you return.
Tamarak Trail Key Features
There are plenty of cool features that separate Tamarak Trail from other roguelikes or deckbuilding games.
Dice Instead of Cards – instead of believing in the heart of the cards and relying on the next draw, you’ll be rolling dice with different abilities on each face. Just as you would be able to customize your decks, you’re able to customize the faces of the dice to be whatever abilities you pick up along the way.
Gorgeous Visuals – Alongside a beautifully detailed map and unique monsters, there’s always something beautiful to look at. The dice themselves take up the bottom half of the screen when you’re engaged in combat and have their own animations and buffs.
Randomly Generated Trail – No two trail journeys will be the same, and you’ll encounter different abilities and rewards each time you venture out. Be careful though, because some runs are going to be easier than other just as some are much harder than others.
Three Character Classes – You’ll get to choose from three character classes: Detective, Magician, a Tracker, who each have their own unique abilities for use in battle!
