Vampire: The Masquerade V5 – Miami After Dark

Families both mortal and immortal are sardined together in mass communities all separated from one another by an invisible line that can only be described as wealth and status. From the richest zip code in America to communities literally being moved out of their homes by means of gentrification, the city is a melting pot of different cultures, religions, races, and kinds; all kinds. The city was officially incorporated in 1896 after railroad tycoon Henry Flagler expanded his Florida East Coast Railway down to the farmland and it has since exploded as a major international, financial, and cultural center. Though the discovery of Miami is a little over a century old, some of its current residents date even further back.; some as much as having been present during Juan Ponce de Leon’s visit in 1513 when it was still considered Biscayne Bay Country.

Miami is in dire need of a prince. In 2015, Princess Frances Emeline, disappeared alongside her Senschal, Baroque. Princess Emeline was an incredibly old woman, having been turned after a fatal railroad accident back in 1943. She is very well-liked by the Barons and Justicars and so in her absence, a new Prince had never been appointed in hopes of her return. Now, five years later, Kindred and other supernatural creatures are roaming the streets of Miami and rendering certain parts a complete wasteland of aggressive attacks or breaks in the masquerade.

The City

The History

She is very well liked by the Barons and Justicars and so in her absence, a new Prince had never been appointed in hopes of her return. Now, years later, Kindred and other supernatural creatures are roaming the streets of Miami and rendering certain parts a complete wasteland of aggressive attacks or breaks in the masquerade.

The Locations

Coconut Grove

Being the oldest neighborhood in Miami, Coconut Grove prides itself in being host to many ongoing yearly festivals and parties. Though the nature and intent of these parties have changed over the years, some say that the participants haven’t. Baron Alphonse Melendez doesn’t keep as tight of a grip on the kindred that run through his domain however, he imposes the same respect to others as he wishes for himself and this has raised many questions among the more curious minds. The domain is divided into two neighborhoods and the baron rarely involves himself in the class squabbles that happen at their borders.

Southwest Coconut Grove

Southwest Coconut Grove is home to Chango’s House and Dodge’s Bar, two safe spaces for kindred of different kinds to gather; if they wish death upon themselves. It’s said that the two are popular meeting places for members of the Followers of Set.

Northeast Coconut Grove

Known for the historical significance of many of the buildings still used by kindred today, Northeast Coconut Grove is home to Villa Vizcaya and Peacock Park. Villa Vizcaya is more commonly known as Baron Alphonse Melendez’s personal headquarters during the night-time when it isn’t a tourist spot while Peacock Park is more commonly where you’ll be sent to should you need to meet just about any informant based in the domain.

Homestead

Connecting Miami to the Everglades, Homestead is commonly known as the stomping grounds of kindred who prefer to stay out of the neon lights and social media scene of Miami. Stomping grounds to Nosferatu and Gangrel, hidden corners, open spaces, and shallow graves are only some of the descriptions that kindred-folk would give the domain with no baron. It wasn’t always as such, but considering the rather cruel death of Leslie Stormhavoc, it has come to be socially and physically avoided by those that prefer to not have their unlives taken from them.

Downtown Miami

When describing the lifestyle and magic of one of the cities that never sleeps, Downtown Miami is the imagery you’re going to want to go for. The lights and action glimmer over the faces of celebrity tourists and locals alike. Most notably is the American Airlines Arena, home to the Miami Heat as well as venue to musical artists around the world. At night, when the kindred from the city are called to gather at Elysium or for some important affair by Baron Corinthia, the arena shuts down to the public and is only accessible to creatures of the night. The area itself is home to many kindred who utilize mortals as ghouls to help their everyday unlives much more accessible.

Key Biscayne

Essentially an island separate from the rest of the mainland, Key Biscayne is where kindred who no longer want to be bothered go. The beaches and emptied parks are home to Thin Bloods and other kindred who know exactly what they are but choose not to care for it. Baron Doris Evergreen doesn’t concern herself too much with the lazy and relatively unbothered kindred in her hasn’t conversed much with other barons since the disappearance of Prince Frances and it believed that she never will unless approached.

Miami Beach

Under the thumb of Baron Ellis Day, Miami Beach is a lawless land of crime, homelessness, parties, and drugs both in the land of the living and dead.

South Beach

While it is no longer in the days of Miami Vice, South Beach still has a ‘night life’ that resembles it. Designer clothing and celebrity dinners are what define the neighborhood and a popular place for mortals and kindred to gather is popular strip club Koniko’s Palace. Crime and drug trafficking are regular occurrences in the neighborhood and while they’re in more isolated areas in the land of the living, the land of the dead imposes far more horrors.

Bayshore

Home to the Miami Beach Golf Club, it has come to be a relatively popular hang out place for more ‘sophisticated’ kindred to discuss their plans. Almost exclusively home to Ventrue, not being clad in professional attire will immediately separate you from the locals. It is also the location of Garo’s Self Storage.

North Beach

The Kindred here either gather in the emptied storefronts or  enclosed construction areas in Aventura Mall or take advantage of the Oleta River to gather information from Biscayne Bay and Everglades kindred.

Surfside

A quiet surf town that also doubles as a safe haven for those who just transitioned into night beasts or are looking for more information about kindred life without fear of being followed or watched.

Wynwood

A party neighborhood, Wynwood is home to plenty of bars and clubs and is constantly packed with so many bodies that it is difficult to tell those who are breathing from those who are not. The neighborhood is home to L7 Warehouse, a popular nightclub that also doubles as the headquarters for Baron Leslie Bono.

The Everglades

Popular among Gangrel and Nosferatu, the wide spaces and untouched lands have definitely made for havens safe from the public eye. The land is considered to be a wasteland in regards to activity but those who are wise know better than to overlook it; especially considering that the Everglades kindred placed Banter, a Gangrel, as their unofficial baron.

The Night

The Heirarchy

Prince – Frances Emeline – Ventrue

Having been given the kiss of unlife at the age of 75 after a horrific railroad accident, Frances Emeline has been a respected force among the South Florida kindred for the last 80 years. She appears as an old woman and is hardly ever seen without her Seneschal, Baroque, as her restriction to a wheelchair renders her immobile. She is gracious and firm and regardless of the notion, there is hardly ever any opposition after she makes a decision.

Seneschal – Baroque – Ventrue

Hardly ever seen without Prince Frances, Baroque is tall with narrow eyes and a bald head and almost always wears a completely black suit with black gloves. He acts as Prince Frances’s voice at times and will either dispute or agree with the Princes on certain matters regarding the city.

Keeper of Elysium – Corinthia – Malkavian

Corinthia was brought into the land of the unliving by a shotgun blast to the head by what she assumed was her ex-boyfriend turned sire. The blast left irreparable brain damage that transferred to her new life and causes multiple personalities to make themselves present at inconvenient times. To counter this, she employs ghouls that she utilizes as ‘personality servants’ that aid her depending on the present personality:

Daisy – an overly aggressive and relatively terrifying version of Corinthia

Darla – a timid and more reserves version of Corinthia

Denise – a party-going version of Corinthia with no regard to real world consequences

Sheriff – Mister Dolby – Nosferatu

Just about the only Nosferatu vampire publicly showing their face. Hand selected by the Princess

Mister Dolby handles situations in the only way he knows how to, with force and by the rules. He was instructed to ensure the city’s safety and believes he is failing at it considering these last five years. He is always well dressed in a three-piece suit and — despite his facial appearance and clan association — does not act, speak, or look as stereotypical Nosferatu do. His build is large and strong and as stiff as a board. He speaks in a deep baritone and without alterations to his voice.

The Barons

Coconut Grove – Alphonse Melendez – Ventrue

The man could not be more unaligned with the Camarilla than a Baron could be. He bases directly out of Villa Vizcaya at night when the ghoul security guards begin their shifts. He offices out of a former dining room turned display piece where decisions based on kindred law take place in the early hours of the night. He does things exclusively for the reason of not being bothered by others within the city’s domain. He believes that if he doesn’t involve himself at what is happening outside of the borders of his domain, he can get by just by abiding by what his “bosses” want, (ie. the Prince, Sheriff, etc.), regardless of whether or not it contradicts his beliefs. He’d rather be eternally left alone to his devices than loyal to those who would declare loyalty to him.

Homestead – None

Downtown Miami – Corinthia – Malkavian

Despite already having a job as the Keeper of Elysium, Corinthia is also tasked with overlooking the entirety of Downtown Miami. The

The Word on the Street

L7 Warehouse

A two-storey warehouse that doubles as a nightclub owned by Baron Leslie Bono. The second floor overlooks a dance floor that houses two industrial shelves with stairwells built into them to reach the different tiers of dance floors and bars. Color and sound fill the space but the warehouse is more of a hangout spot than a nightclub and the noise level still allows for conversation at a normal volume at the top of the stairs.

American Airlines Arena – Night of Stars

Home to The American Airlines Arena by day, (and in most cases by night), the site is still considered reserved for one particular non-living person: Corinthia. When she invites kindred to the Night of Stars, she expects them to go. A complete day-to-night transformation into a kind of experimental circus, Night of Stars is as much a domain-wide party where all kindred are welcome. Dancing above the heads of the party patrons are trapeze artists and other performers leaping and performing without any netting below. The atmosphere is relatively ritzy and even Nosferatu are sure to show up in their best clothes when invited.

Garo’s Self Storage

Located in Bayshore, Garo’s Self Storage is like any private self storage company except managed by kindred. The employees who work the office during the day are completely unaware of what their bosses are doing once they leave at 6pm for the day. The owners of the facility, Garo and his wife Celine are Toreador who are widely respected for giving out storage lockers to fledgling kindred and other lost souls.

Bingo’s Bumpers

Bingo’s Bumpers is one of many hand car washes in South Florida, but among the only run by kindred. The establishment is run by Bingo, a Nosferatu vampire who’s looks could very well be confused with those of an incredibly old gentleman, which he uses to his advantage. Considering this, Bingo uses the car wash as a way to keep kindred safe from conditions that render them unsafe and this face is well known throughout Miami.

The Sewers

Known only to the Nosferatu, this intricate system of tunnels goes all throughout the underneath of Miami and can access just about every domain and neighborhood without having to see the night sky or light of day. The system meets at a single large location close to Kendall however the tunnels themselves are still widely unknown to those too afraid to venture below. While there are many different entrances to the “center” of this intricate system of tunnels, only one single Nosferatu vampire, Garth, is ever seen guarding the padlocked gates.

Dodge’s Bar

A hole in the wall bar in Southwest Coconut Grove, Dodge’s Bar has darts, pool tables, and beer. Coming in for information on weapon dealers, large purchases, and the like will yield positive results almost each time. Coming in just to enjoy yourself after a long day isn’t something that the patrons do and fights are a common form of greeting.

Koniko’s Palace

Peacock Park

Having been known as a hangout for hippies and general youth counterculture over the years, Peacock Park’s night life couldn’t be further from what those still breathing saw in the daytime. The park has come to be where deals of great importance are made among those who would prefer not to be noticed. Right along Dinner Key marina and littered by the long and fat trunks of palm trees, the dead have learned how to hide in plain sight once the soccer and baseball field lights turn off. Sometimes, kindred will even jump the high fences of the skate park and throw parties, leaving their trash for the owners or police to find in the morning.

Villa Vizcaya

Now publicly known as Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, Villa Vizcaya was once home to James Deering and still holds numerous antiques within it’s Italian Renaissance design. The Villa’s interior has been designed more like a museum in its more recent years, but that doesn’t stop kindred from hopping the velvet ropes when they are summoned by Baron Alphonse Melendez, who uses it as his base of operations. During the day, you would never assume that kindred lie asleep within the walls and behind closed doors during tours.

SurfShack

Tucked within the sleepy surf town of Surfside lies SurfShack. The small store  is home to custom fins, boards, and general surfboarding goods. Once the store closes and the ghouls that manage it lock the doors, the kindred that have nowhere to go find a home in SurfShack’s basement. While still considered a part of Baron Felicity Dames domain, it has remained untouched and unbothered for as long as it has been in business.

Chango’s House

Informant Chango’s home. Considered to be one of the more well informed individuals in Miami, most people go directly to him when in need of some kind of information regarding the city. Knocking directly on the front door of his home in Southwest Coconut Grove will almost always reward you with information that you did not have prior about something in the supernatural world. The home also doubles as a kind of hole-in-the-wall eatery that serves incredibly basic meals prepared by ghoul mortals during the day and drinks to those with nothing better to do throughout the night. The establishment is sandwiched between a cell phone provider retailer and a mattress company chain.

The Folk

Odom Basilisk – Ventrue

His word is considered law in a lot of contexts within Camarilla law in Miami. Odom is a kind of political figure within the city of kindred who has upset his fair share of — what he considers — unclean clans. (ie. Nosferatu, Brujah, Gangrel, etc.) His actions have had direct consequences in the acts of leaving these “unclean” clans homeless or seemingly hunted down by other kindred through a spread of lies and information. His political presence has increased significantly since the Princess’ disappearance and his reach has definitely been felt by all those that he wishes to make clear that he does not like.

Bingo – Nosferatu

A Nosferatu vampire working at the eponymous Bingo’s Bumpers, Bingo utilizes his looks to disguise himself as an older man. Those who are well acquainted with him know him to be a kind of pillar for the Nosferatu community, giving them low profile jobs within his

Garth – Nosferatu

Guard for the gate system that leads to the “center” of the sewer system. He tells different riddles and those who are able to solve the riddle at all are granted access. He seems to be the only gatekeeper for this intricate system of tunnels as he is the only kindred described whenever anyone comes to any of the gates in the sewers. He is hunched over though his appearance seems as though he would be very tall should he straighten up. He has wispy black hair that covers the top of his head and reaches past his ears. His complexion is dirty and cracked, with deep black eyes that stare deeply into whoever they are looking at.

Chango – Ministry

A tall, black vampire with black locks that cascade over his shoulders and down his back. His eyes are a soft brown, almost grey, and he wears a loose, grey button-down shirt that is left open to expose his welted, scarred, and tattooed torso. He is barefoot and the torn grey slacks that he wears are rolled up to expose his ankles that are covered in the same gold jewelry that cover his wrist, neck, and ears. He speaks with a smug demeanor and will always be actively present in conversations relating to the ever growing drug trade within the kindred community, having entered the race with his very own blood drug.

The Kindred

Tremere

Almost nonexistent in the city of Miami after the disappearance of the Prince, they once held a rather powerful position within the city’s government. Samata Michelove represented the clan as a sort of leader for them all. She would entrust a specially chosen kindred with the Cabin, a kind of textbook that detailed all the magics that she had known to learn over her years, hoping to continue passing that knowledge throughout the generations of the clan. It is unsure where she might have fled to after the initial

Ventrue

The city is holding on for dear unlife at the Camarilla ideals which puts the Ventrue at the top of the economic and social ladder; or at least they hope it does. Their hold on most aspects regarding rulemaking and such is in their hands but they hold onto it by a very, very thin thread. The disappearance of the Prince has made it difficult for Ventrue to find any real permanent hold on any one place as the clan is consistently being made fun of as being abandoned by the Prince.
