The summer is about to end, but the indie game releases keep on coming in August 2025. As you spend your last days on the beach, five new games may take your time during the evenings, such as the beautiful Sword of the Sea, which is a skateboarding-like adventure in a fantasy world. Here are the August 2025 indie game releases you should know about.
The Knightling

The first game in this ecclectic mix of titles is The Knightling, developed by small Dutch studio Twirlbound and published by Saber Interactive. It’s an ambitious open world adventure game starring a knight looking for his master Sir Lionstone in a sprawling, colorful envrionment.
Instead of a sword in hand, this Knightling uses a shield to attack his foes. The Steam page says you’ll be able to “block, parry, and create ideal openings, then leverage big attacks and combos to finish off foes.” There are also some compelling platforming sections to look forward to. You’ll also be able to slide down hills on your shield, which sounds like a delight.
The Knightling launches on August 28 for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.
Sword of the Sea

From a shield to a rideable sword, Sword of the Sea brings stunning environments by the team behind Abzu and The Pathless. The desert landscape looks familiar to the beautiful Journey by thatgamecompany in some aspects, which is a wonderful surprise. Researching further for this article, this actually makes sense as its from the same art director! Journey‘s composer Austin Wintory is behind the soundtrack for Sword of the Sea too.
On the hero’s sword, you’ll be riding like Tony Hawk through the waves of sand and water throughout the game. The Steam page claims we’ll be able to do flips, spins, and grab tricks as we “shred halfpipes, ramps, and wallrides.” There will be times to relax, however, in this meditative experience.

As you traverse through this world, you’ll be reclaiming a lost ocean within the sandy features of the game. You’ll be able to realize that when the game launches on PC and PS5 on August 19. Sword of the Sea will also be available for PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium subscribers from day one of its release.
Discounty

Crinkle Cut Games will be delivering a discount supermarket simulator experience in Discounty on August 21. It has a cute chibi art style that will melt your heart, but this tycoon simulator sounds like it will get serious. You’ll get “caught up in small-town drama,” according to the Steam page as you plan your shop’s layout and make trade deals to help your aunt’s business empire prosper.
You’ll build relationships with the locals who rely on your supermarket (as its the only one in the small town), work the checkout, and manage stock levels throughout the experience. One interesting mechanic, however, is not overly expanding quickly. The dichotomy of persuing endless profits or helping the community will have an impact on the story.
Discounty will be available on PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, and Nintendo Switch, if you want to step into this tycoon title. The concept might make it one of the most popular August 2025 indie games.
Tiny Bookshop

From one management sim to another, Tiny Bookshop is a promising indie releasing in August 2025. It’s a cozy narrative management game that lets you stock up your shop with all manner of books to suit your customers.
You can move your bookshop to multiple scenic locations as you get to know the locals. In addition to the background and location, you can also customize your bookshop how you like it with plants or candles, etc. The items you select will have an impact on your customers and can introduce new mechanics into the formula.
You’ll be recommending books to customers just like you would as a shopowner. You’ll keep track of their reading habits, and as you visit new locations, you’ll get new clientelle to cater to. Tiny Bookshop releases on August 7 for the PC. You can try out a demo on Steam.
Fallen City Brawl

Last but not least is Fallen City Brawl, a beat-em-up inspired by the late 80’s and 90’s games of the genre. The pixel art style really jumps onto the screen with various weather effects that make this beat-em-up stand out from the rest.
The Steam page says to expect “destructive combos, counters, air-throws, grappling, parries, special moves and “RIOT” supers” in this indie game title. You’ll be able to beat down foes alone or with friends via local co-op, just like the old days.
The arcade gameplay of Fallen City Brawl is complimented with animated cutscenes and a soundtrack by Daniel Lindholm, who previously composed music for Street Fighter V, Lollipop Chainsaw, and Resident Evil 6. Fallen City Brawl punches its way to PC and consoles on August 12.
