Scrolling through all of the new and trending demos on Steam, I couldn’t help but notice Tower of Kalemonvo by developer osur stick out. The game’s description immediately pulled me in on first read: a gothic-fantasy ARPG that plays like Diablo with roguelike elements?! Count me in! I haven’t installed a game as quickly as I have this one in a while.
At first glance, it definitely seems like a Diablo clone. However, there is so much more nuance that allows for deep customization and the ability for you to really create whatever character you want.
Fate Hangs in the Balance in Tower of Kalemonvo
If you’ve already played through other popular ARPGs, then the gameplay for Tower of Kalemonvo will feel right at home. It wastes no time to have you pick your character, name them, choose your starting two weapons, and decide on your difficulty. The, you’re right in the middle of the action. Once you’ve got that down, your objective is to climb to the top of the tower without dying, facing all sorts of fantastic enemies and bosses along the way.
I really enjoyed not having to spam my mouse button to attack. Instead. you can hover over enemies and hold the button to attack down the entire time. I also thought it was an incredible choice to add throwable weapons and shields that can reflect projectiles. Combat wasn’t all about slashing enemies or using magic, it was also a lot about strategy.
Classless characters are also a huge plus in Tower of Kalemonvo. Instead of choosing a class or being confined to a specific weapon, just fill in the stats you want as you level up and equip the items attached to them. As I played through the demo a few times, I realized that trying to be the same “class” every time just didn’t make sense. Especially considering that every playthrough will include different rooms, different rewards, and different enemies.
As you would expect, there are also different difficulty settings for you to enjoy if you’re into that. The Burtal difficulty has super limited resources and even more deadly enemies. It wasn’t something I was able to get through, but it absolutely felt like something that more dedicated players will be trying out over and over again.
